Cover Reveal, Giveaway, and an Excerpt for Unexplained

It's finally here!

It’s finally here!

There are many milestones in an author’s career, but none as exciting (and nerve wracking) as the debut novel.  I am currently in the throes of that particular experience, and I have to be honest- it’s thrilling and frightening at the same time!

After years of preparation, this turtle is finally approaching the finish line. My debut novel, Unexplained, which is Book One of the Higher Elevation Series, is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The actual release date is October 25th, and I hope to have it available on other retailers shortly thereafter.

Enticing Journey Book Promotions is hosting the blog tour and though it just started, I am pleased with the response so far. We are also doing a give away of a $25.00 Amazon gift card, so be sure to enter.  Here’s a link to the info, along with a book description and an excerpt:

==Blurb==

When it comes to love, some things just can’t be explained….

A skeptical reporter who witnesses the unbelievable…

It’s the late 1970’s, and tenacious journalism student Sarah McKenn doesn’t believe the rumors of strange happenings in her small college town of Fort Winston, Colorado. But a supernatural event she experiences while chasing down a story for her school’s newspaper leaves her questioning everything. In her quest for understanding, she meets and falls for Chris, the only man she believes can help her unravel the truth.

A psychology student determined to prove his psychic talents are real…

Christian Levine is on the cusp of a bright future as a research psychologist when he agrees to participate in a secret experiment at the request of his mentor. Though it’s the perfect opportunity to prove his psychic abilities, the project turns deadly when Chris discovers the real motivation of the man in control of it all. Chris is forced to choose between his own freedom or saving the lives of his mentor and Sarah─the woman he loves.

A bond that transcends all boundaries…

The chemistry between Sarah and Chris surprises them—a soul-filling passion and a deep psychic connection neither thought possible. Can they discover what their bond means before their lives are ripped apart?

==Sneak Peak at Unexplained==

“Sarah, look at me.”

She did, and her breath caught at the intense look in his eyes. They were indigo in the muted light, and she wanted to believe she saw sincerity there, and heard the echo of it in his voice.

“We only have a limited time on this earth, and nothing is permanent. But it’s all okay, I’ve seen the other side, and I know that even though experiences and relationships come and go, who we are remains the same. So even though you and I may only be physically together for a short while, our souls will be forever connected. Especially since you have the same gift I have. We can see and feel what others only daydream about.”

Whatever she had expected him to say, this wasn’t it. But she knew in her heart, he was right. There was a soul-deep connection between them.  So who made up the rules on soul mates, anyway? Maybe they were not always the one you marry. Maybe they could be fascinating strangers who stirred up your world and then moved on, leaving you broken, but somehow more yourself than you were before they came along.

Upcoming Series Release- Three Retro Romances With a Supernatural Twist

Couple holding hands rear view against sunrise over mountains

Are you tired of the same old tropes and settings in Romance novels lately?  Do you like a steamy romance that also leaves you wondering about the mystical side of love and life?

If so, you might be interested in my upcoming three-book series, Higher Elevation. The first book, Unexplained, is due to be released this fall (date to be determined). The other two books will be released within the months following, so readers won’t have to wait long to read the whole series if they enjoy the first book.

The Waiting

My strategy with this series was to have all three books complete before releasing the first one, not only to ensure continuity with the characters and their stories, but to make sure they would all be available in a short time frame. Personally, if I enjoy a book, I hate waiting too long for the next installment. It meant reigning in my excitement to finally be a published author, but I am so glad I waited. By taking my time, I was able to “flesh out” the stories, and add layers and references that make the series a cohesive whole.  That said, each book can be read as a standalone (no cliffhangers), but reading them in order will create a richer experience for the reader.

The Genre

So what does this series have to offer?  The official genre is Paranormal Romance, but there are elements of suspense and mystery.  I often use the term “Supernatural” to describe the stories, as my characters are ghosts and psychics, rather than the usual Paranormal creatures (ala shifters, vampires, etc).  Other themes explored are astral travel, remote viewing, soul mates, near death experience, and the afterlife.  I love exploring the unexplained, but don’t worry, it never gets too deep or heavy!  Just enough to make you wonder…

The Time Period

What is also different about the Higher Elevation Series is that it is set in the twentieth century─in the ‘seventies and ‘eighties. If you lived through that period, you may enjoy the nostalgia factor.  There are lots of pop culture references because they affected the lives of my characters.  If you weren’t around then, it might be a way to experience what life was like with less technology, without having to invent a time machine.  (I can’t believe no one has done that yet, by the way….)

The Description

So, here’s my official series blurb:

The Higher Elevation Series- True Love Transcends All Boundaries

Three Retro Romances, set in the 1970’s to 1980’s, about the power of love, with a supernatural twist

Fort Winston, Colorado is a small town nestled against the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Maybe it’s the wind that howls down the plains, or the jagged peaks that cast eerie shadows over the land. Whatever the cause, there’s always something going on there that not’s quite right…or easily explained.

Can love alone prevail against strange psychic powers, tortured ghosts and the secrets of the past?

Here’s the titles and a short description of the books:

Book One, Unexplained

When it comes to love, some things just can’t be explained…

Can a skeptical journalism student and an astral-traveling psychology major investigate their weird psychic connection (and their scorching attraction for each other) before his talents put them both in danger?

Book Two, Untouched

Love isn’t always what it seems, when you’re living in the past…

A hippie photographer with a painful past is haunted by a ghost only he can see. When the ghostly girl shows up in his photos, his beautiful but off-limits (because she’s a virgin) friend agrees to help him solve the mystery. Overcoming his past and getting rid of a ghost won’t be half as difficult as resisting his gorgeous read-headed friend, Amanda.

Book Three, Undeniable

Time and distance can’t break an undeniable bond…

After eight years apart, can two people rekindle a love that disappeared? It’s going to be tough, for a psychic astral-traveling dude and a lonely single mom who have lost the sexual-psychic connection they once had─or have they?

Okay, so there are some common tropes─opposites attract, trying to resist someone you shouldn’t be with, and taking a second chance at love.  But being set in a time when we didn’t exactly have the world at our fingertips makes the quest for love and solving mysteries a bit more difficult.  Plus it was just plain fun to write!

Stay tuned for upcoming excerpts, teasers and a cover reveal date.  I am so excited to share my stories and will be posting more information soon.  You can follow this blog by signing up at reneeregent.com, or my old blog at reneeregent.com/worpress.com.

I’ll leave you with the first line of Book One, Unexplained:

“There’s nothing in the world that can’t be explained, eventually.”

New Author Website Launch and Blog Moving Soon!

blog, blog, blog - blogging concept on a napkin with cup of espr

Part of the fun of being an author is the many milestones you get to celebrate throughout your career.  Whether Indie published or traditionally published, launching your first Author Website is right up there among the proud moments to celebrate.

After months of struggle and work, I am finally ready to launch my very own Author Website, hosted by Zibster.com. My blog will be hosted there as well, and my first post on the new site will explain how I came to choose them.  I am very excited to see my vision finally coming together, and I learned so much during this process, even with all the mistakes and false starts I had to endure.

If you have been a regular follower of my blog, I thank you. I will try to make the transition seamless, but you may have to sign up again after the new site is launched so that you won’t miss any posts. There will also be a separate sign-up for my newsletter, which will be more focused on my books (publishing soon) and geared toward readers. There will be news about my publishing schedule and appearances, inside info on my stories and characters, and promotional events.

I plan to continue writing this blog, and exploring the business side of writing, as well as fun topics such as fiction trends, new age subjects (which are featured in my books), Outlander, and hot guys in general.  It’s a bit eclectic, I know… but that’s how I roll!  I hope you’ll find something to interest you whether you are a writer, a reader, or both.

I’ll be posting an announcement on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus) once the new website launches, so please stop by and take a look. I’d love to know what you think!

Note:  the new website will still be under reneeregent.com.

Thanks again for joining me on this crazy, wonderful journey called being an author.

My Top Five Blog Posts- Proof That Sex Still Sells

Obligatory Ab Shot

Obligatory Ab Shot

Well, it finally happened. After three years and almost one hundred blog posts, I hit the wall─I could not come up with a topic for my next blog post. Frankly, I’m surprised it took this long, proving you never know what you can accomplish until you try!

So I took a look at my stats to see what my all-time most popular posts were, hoping the muse would jump back into my lap(top), and the words would start flowing again. The results were telling, and also amusing.

Work vs. Fun

I’m no longer a newbie writer, but I never saw myself as an expert, either. So my blog posts about the writing and publishing business are from the perspective of my own journey, which I hope will help others to find their own path. In between those posts, I threw in some topics just for fun. Turns out, it’s those fun posts which have garnered the most views and shares, and continue to climb.

So here are the current stats on my Top Five All-Time blog posts (you can click through to read them, if you like):

What Is The Sexiest Piece of Clothing A Man Can Wear?                                                     2,439 views!!

Tattoos- As Important As Hot Abs on Heroes?                                                                           404 views

What Is It About Jamie Fraser?                                                                                                      373 views

Five Ways Writing Erotic Poetry Helps Romance Writers                                                        299 views

The Future of Romance Novel Cover Art- Are Hot Abs the New Bodice Rippers?               271 views

I’m still mystified why the first one, a light piece about men’s sexy clothing styles, is far and away the top post. There are photos of fully or partially clothed men in it, but all are tasteful. Apparently, many of you were curious about what clothes make a man look hot!

I Sensed A Theme…

There is a running theme with all five posts─sex.  Hot abs, sexy guys, even my all-time favorite fictional hero, Jamie Fraser of Outlander fame. Even the one piece specifically focused on writing skills is about erotic poetry. So, yes, sex still sells, or in this case, succeeds in gathering an audience.

More To Come…

I’m sure in the future I will have lots to say about fiction trends, the business of writing, and other important topics. But the steamy side of romance is still important to me, and it shows in my fiction work (which I hope to bring to the world very soon). So there will be also be posts like the ones above, where we just have fun and look at hot guys and talk about Book Boyfriends.  I believe balance is the key to everything!

So thanks for reading and following my blog. My goal is to be helpful and entertaining for many years to come.

And stayed tuned for the unveiling of my new Author Website, coming soon…

Do you have a blog?  What are your most popular posts?  I’d love to hear about it!

New Author Interview- Donjaline Hope

wwphope

Wayward Pines, the popular novel series written by author Blake Crouch, has spawned a series on Fox television and dozens of titles in the Kindle Worlds publishing program. One of the most recent Kindle Worlds titles was written by my good friend and talented author, Donjaline Hope. This exciting novella was her debut, and she plans to expand into full length novels, writing in a variety of genres such as steampunk, adventure, and romance.

I sat down recently with Mrs. Hope to get the scoop on her debut and what she has planned for the future.

Congratulations on your debut with Wayward Pines: Salt Lake City Expedition. What enticed you to write this novella for Kindle Worlds?  As an avid reader, I got into the mystery of Wayward Pines.  I fell in love with all its twists and turns, and my brain started spinning with new ideas- new “what-ifs”.

How was the process of submission and subsequent publishing? Would you write for Kindle Worlds again?  I would love to create more Kindle stories. As a matter of fact, I am in the process of writing a series of novellas for another backstory for the Abbies and their transformation in the Wayward Pines Series. I love the idea of allowing authors to write stories to parallel popular Kindle Worlds. Fan Fiction has always been popular. Kindle Worlds opens the door for the rest of the world to have access to some fabulous authors.

What drew you to write this type of story?

I have prior military experience as well as an interest in survival stories. Wayward Pines takes a new and interesting approach to survival. In Blake Crouch’s story, it’s not so much about survival of the fittest as it is survival of the chosen. I find this concept interesting.

You also write in the Steampunk genre. Tell us about your upcoming novel series.

I am excited to explore the world of cogs and top hats, adventure and intrigue. I am going to start with a novel mixing romance with a steampunk twist.  Lady Copper, Steampunk in Love Book 1, is in its final stages of editing and will be ready for release in May 2016!  The story is about Lady Copper, who is far from your typical lady. In a time where woman are still sheltered and thought of as only “wife” or “mother”  or “daughter”, it is against the law for them to invent/tinker (those are thought of as jobs of men). Copper is a genius when it comes to these things and being sheltered, shall we say, from society, she really does move to the beat of her own drum. Branton, the book’s hero, jumps in to save her, his thoughts mostly lustful. He must have her, although things don’t always go according to the plan. Their journey has many ups and downs, with twists and turns a plenty.

Here are some teasers from within the pages of Lady Copper, released just for your readers (for more teasers see the website):

Sweat dripped over his tautly muscled stomach. A tingling sensation bloomed low in her stomach. Vines of heat spread throughout her body as she followed his movements. #LustyThoughtsFromCopper

The driver cranked a small lever and the carriage jerked forward. Copper would have tumbled forward had Branton not grabbed her around the waist. A blush spread across her cheeks as she ended up held against his chest. #AccidentsHappen

“The theater is just a few buildings over from here,” Branton informed Copper. “You can see it, over the top of that building there. It’s one of the first buildings the Academy has gotten to hover in the sky. We will have to take one of the giant glass tubes to get to the top.”  #SteampunkHoveringTheaterOverNight

Patience was a gift he had in abundance. He could wait, would wait. It was one of the things that made his job so hard for most people. They got impatient and that’s when they made mistakes. He had all the time he would need, and would wait until he had the perfect opening. #EvilPlots

What is it about Steampunk that interests you?

The possibilities! There’s something about having the option to rewrite history, changing and keeping what you, as the writer, wish. Steampunk includes everything I love about Victorian England, from secrets and intrigue to the seedy underside of society. I could create romance, mystery, or even adventures with airship pirates. The possibilities of stories is endless.

 Anything else on the horizon?

At the same time as I’m editing Lady Copper, I’m also working on Book 2 in the series which is due to contain the invention of airships. With any new invention there is definitely room for some sabotage, as well as some increased sexual tension. Book 2 has brought out many hot and steamy scenes already, and I look forward to the many adventures my characters will take me on.

I’m looking forward to what’s next from this sweet but quirky author. I’ve read some of her steamy Steampunk stories, and even though that particular genre isn’t my thing, I really enjoyed her portrayal of life in that world. Vivid characters, interesting world building and innovative creations are the hallmarks of her stories. I recommend you follow her on social media or her website to keep up with what’s coming next from Donjaline Hope.

The Power of Love, With a Supernatural Twist- Higher Elevation Series

Students holding hands against lake

Do you like romances that have a happy ending, but leave you wondering about mystical side of life? If so, you might be interested in my upcoming series, Higher Elevation. It’s a three-book series (so far) about ordinary couples who experience extraordinary things on their way to happily ever after.

So, yes, I am doing more with my writing time than blogging!  I’ve been hard at work on the Higher Elevation series, and I hope to self-publish the first book in the series in 2016. All three books are in edits right now, and I’m very excited to share my stories with you!  Here’s a little bit more about it:

Garden of the Gods

The series is set in Fort Winston, a fictional small town at the foot of the Colorado Rockies where strange things have been known to happen. This series is also set in the twentieth century- in the ‘seventies and ‘eighties, a time when we didn’t exactly have the world at our fingertips…

Book One, Unexplained– When it comes to love, some things just can’t be explained…

Can a skeptical journalism student and an astral-traveling psychology major investigate their weird psychic connection (and their scorching attraction for each other) before his talents put them in danger?

Book Two, Untouched– Love isn’t always what it seems to be…when you’re living in the past

A hippie photographer with a painful past is haunted by a ghost only he can see. When the ghostly girl shows up in his photos, his beautiful, but off-limits (because she’s a virgin) friend agrees to help him solve the mystery. Overcoming his past and getting rid of a ghost won’t be half as difficult as resisting his gorgeous red-headed friend, Amanda.

Book Three, Undeniable– Time and distance can’t break an undeniable bond…

Can love transcend the bonds of time and distance?  After eight years apart, can two people rekindle a love that disappeared? It’s going to be tough, for a psychic astral-traveling dude and a lonely single mom who have lost the sexual-psychic connection they once had…or have they?

Stay tuned for excerpts and more information on the Higher Elevation Series.  I’ve also updated my website, http://reneeregent.com, and will soon have a newsletter sign up and other good stuff.  Drop me a line or comment and let me know what you think!

What To Do If You Hate Blogging

Cute Little Girl Typing On Vintage Typewriter Keyboard

What? You hate blogging? That’s okay. Writing and maintaining a blog is not for everyone. It can be a lot of work, and many writers feel it takes away from time they could be working on other writing projects. However, I believe it is one of the best tools for writers available, and here’s how you can still learn from it, even if you never blog.

In Favor of Blogging

I have learned so much from the almost three years I have been writing my blog posts. A recent post on Anne R. Allen’s blog, explains why blogging is still one of the best things an author can do, including 10 ways blogging can help your career. Whether or not her post inspires you to start or revive your own blog, there is still something to be learned. For example, how having a blog helps to get your name recognized by search engines. Connecting on social media is fine, and a following can be built using whatever social media outlet you prefer. But if you don’t have an actual website, a blog is a great way to get your name out there.

Another aspect of blogging I’d like to add is, since you’re in control, you can discuss any topic you like. This will help attract followers who like what you like. I enjoy discussing New Age/Supernatural topics from time to time, and I’m also a big fan of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. A friend of mine, Tasha L. Harrison, is passionate about diversity in books, and romance novels in particular. So she addresses that topic in some of her posts. Anyone who has an interest in the subjects you discuss may become a new follower, or a fan of your books, and hopefully, a friend.

If you are a new writer, you don’t have to blog about the subject of writing. In fact, it is probably better if you hold off on that until you have more experience. But you can talk about certain aspects of your journey, as I have on such topics as writing a first draft, how lack of confidence can affect your writing, trends you notice in the marketplace, etc.

Targeted Learning

It is okay if you still find blogging is not for you. What you can do then is learn from other writer’s blogs. There are tons of blog posts about pretty much any topic you can think of, especially writing tips. If you are a new writer, blogs can be a great educational tool. Supplement your craft studies and conference going by subscribing to the blogs that speak to you. That is what I did, and it was easier to learn that way, in small doses, than to try to get through an entire book of writing instruction.

Build Your Own Reference Guide

Here’s my tip: subscribe to the writing tips/instruction blogs that you like, and they will send you an email when they post. If they are discussing a topic you want to read later, or feel you may need to refer to at some point, move it to a file in your email. For example, I have files broken down by topic: Plotting, Character Development, Dialogue, etc. I also have files pertaining to marketing and the business side of writing, such as: Formatting, Web Design, Covers, Advertising, etc. I have amassed a trove of information, available at my fingertips whenever I need it.

My Favorite Blogs

I have a few blogs I subscribe to, but I also find relevant posts through social media. Writers are great about sharing helpful information on Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus. You can also bookmark posts you find by searching on a particular topic. How cool is that? Anything you want to know can be found in a few keystrokes.

Here are the blogs that I subscribe to for writing tips and instruction:

Anne R. Allen’s Blog

Kristin Lamb’s Blog

Janice Hardy’s Fiction University

Jami Gold’s Blog
